Goal #1

Improve Student Advising

Strategies:

·        Identify “at risk” students, especially among the incoming freshman class, as those who test into two or more developmental subjects.

·        Identify advisors for at-risk students and provide training for intrusive advising techniques (Academic Success Advisors).

·        Have at risk students see Academic Success Advisors until the students complete their developmental coursework.

·        Have at risk students take GE 101 instead of GE 100

·        Create an online advisor’s handbook, available to all advisors

·        Create an online student handbook

·        Create an advising web site for students and advisors with links to online manuals and other advising links.

Goal #2

To improve developmental mathematics placement and delivery

Strategies:

·        Offer Challenge Exam

·        Offer a stronger variety of course times/day offerings on various campuses

·        Limit enrollment in developmental mathematics classes to 20-25

·        Offer paired MT 055/MT 065

Goal #3

To improve student attitudes toward learning mathematics

Strategy: 

·        Offer a series of workshops for math anxiety and math study skills; provide them in class

Goal #4

To improve student use and quality of available campus resources

Strategies:

·        After assessing need, hire more math tutors where necessary.

·        After assessing need, have evening hours for math tutors

·        Provide structured tutor training on all campuses with tutor labs

·        Seek CRLA certification of program

·        Improve tutor wages

·        Make tutors more easily recognizable on campus 

·        Assess developmental math library holdings

·        Increase developmental math library holdings where necessary

·        Publicize availability of resources in libraries

Goal #5

To provide a central organizational structure for developmental education

Strategies: 

Developmental Education Coordinator would have these specific duties: oversee development of program philosophy, goals and program evaluation.  Oversee QEP implementation and evaluation both formative and summative.  Report to QEP Oversight Committee.  The Developmental Coordinator would also be the primary author of the 5 year impact report to SACS.

Goal #6

To strengthen professional development for full time and adjunct faculty

Strategies: 

·        Provide mentors for adjunct developmental math faculty members

·        Provide more involved professional development regarding learning styles and PLATO 

·        Invite developmental math adjunct faculty to division meetings

·        Provide access to professional development funds for adjunct developmental math instructors.

·        Provide professional development for full time faculty regarding pilot projects and advising

Goal #7

To improve student success in developmental mathematics courses

Strategies:

·        Pilot Project for CAI Instruction

·        Pilot for PLATO Supplemental Instruction

·        Pilot Learning Styles

·        Running Start (part of Expanding Horizons)

·        Attendance/Persistence Monitoring Project

·        Research Project to discover Master Teacher Characteristics
