WHITESBURG CAMPUS
1. Did you enroll in a Developmental Math course at SKCTC?
Yes 13 No 2 Currently enrolled 14
2. Describe, in your opinion, what made or makes you successful or unsuccessful.
I can do a lot of things I just can’t remember them.
I am pretty responsible, come to class work hard.
I am unsuccessful in math because I have trouble adapting to all the different techniques over the past few years.
What makes me successful is knowing that I can do something and that I did my best to get there.
With a good teacher to show me the skills that I need to know in order to be successful.
What makes me successful is if someone teaches me and I understand. Being unsuccessful would be the opposite – teach something and not understand.
Hands on, actually doing the work.
I had a really good teacher. Attend class regular. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Showing up for class and doing assignments.
The teacher made it easy to understand.
Math is a hard subject to understand.
Learning the new ways mat is taught.
Having a goal, and driving for that goal. Staying focused.
Being in class, class participation, study guides.
Reviewing what I thought I had forgot.
What makes me successful is my eagerness to learn and better myself.
I think to be successful you need to attend class and listen to the teacher instead of talking.
I’m success.
My attitude is what makes me successful.
My determination.
My high school math classes made me an unsuccessful math student.
We’re learning and expanding knowledge.
3. Did you or do you attend classes regularly? (Explain why or why not).
Yes, but last week was too hard on me coming to school was no option.
Yes, because when I miss it makes it harder to keep up.
I do attend regularly because I lose track of the class if I do not attend.
Yes I attend every class on time.
Yes, I attend class every week.
Yes, I attend classes when I have them.
Yes, because if you don’t go on a daily basis you get behind on content and homework.
Yes, math is hard for me; if I miss class I will miss something that is helpful to me.
Yes.
Yes, so I can get a degree and move out of here.
Yes, every class I attend. I am afraid if I miss a class I won’t know what is going and miss homework assignments.
Yes, because you need to keep up.
Yes, I don’t want to get behind.
Yes, it helps me to retain information.
Yes, to be sure you get what is being taught.
Yes to keep up and not get behind.
Yes, if you miss class you miss out on the things that help you better understand the cause.
Yes, you can’t learn if you don’t show up for class.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes, so I don’t get behind on anything.
Yes.
Yes, I am trying to learn as much as possible.
Yes.
4. What could the instructors do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?
Mr. Cook talks in riddles he confuses me a lot.
Not such a long class, it’s hard to pay attention and focus in 2 ½ hour class.
Make sure every student is honestly caught up in the class.
The instructors could be more helpful by making sure everyone understands what’s going on in class, and by making sure everyone’s questions are answered.
To make sure that everybody understands the material.
Have hands-on activities.
Be like, Mr. Cook and break it down to the basics.
Don’t rush through math class. Make sure everyone knows what is going on before they go to the next assignment.
Be more exploratory.
Make sure all students are on the same learning level.
Go slow and describe it over and over.
Maybe give time in class to work on homework assignments, while in class with the instructor.
Give review quizzes/tests. Review homework. Have conferences with students.
Be available for individual questions if needed.
I think they do a good job already.
Explain the formulas to solving to problems better. Not just expect us to know them. Especially one like me who have been out of school for 20 years!!!
Keep reviewing the material until the students catch on to the work.
Make it more simpler.
Teach it simpler way.
Stay on them in class, making them participate.
Be more math classes offered at different times of the day.
Teach like Mr. Cook.
Offer it at different times.
5. What could SKCTC, the college, do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?
Review everything they have learned in the past.
Make sure everyone understands before moving on.
Everything it is currently doing.
Provide more tutors each and everyday.
Make sure they are in the right class for their level of understanding.
See if everyone is learning everything; keep teaching and getting students to understand, do what it takes.
Offer math more days a week and less time in discussion, 21\2 hours @ a time is too much you lose interest because you are there so long.
Teach the class more. Don’t have only one math class. Offer it more days a week.
Offer math classes they have at various times.
Offer it more than twice a day.
Have more classes like this one. Better times.
Offer the class more.
Have more math classes scheduled for each semester and offer different hours for those classes.
Offer more classes, more times (scheduling)
Need more tutors and more developmental class to help prepare for the major math classes. Need more than one major math teacher who is more willing to help us to learn and not just expect it! Need on line help for those who can’t see tutors.
Listen to the students when they say they don’t have a clue how to work the problems.
More homework.
Take it off the schedule.
Make the work fund, and easily learned.
Go by ACT scores.
Go by ACY scores.
I’m not sure.
6. How much did you do you use the Academic Support Center and tutors? (Please explain).
Once to get my GED.
Not a lot didn’t have time.
I haven’t felt compelled to go to the tutors yet.
I personally don’t use any tutors or the Academic Support Center at the moment but I may later. I really don’t need any personal help right now.
I use the Academic Support Center but I have not used any tutors.
None.
I understand the method of teaching that was taught.
Quiet often when needed.
Often when I can’t comprehend something.
None.
Every chance I get to use the center and I’m a tutor too.
To get help and understanding.
Twice each week.
Haven’t used so far, have not had time.
If I need help I go.
Don’t use because I work full time and go to school full time and the tutors are never there when I have the time to go!
Very little, I will soon if I don’t start catching on to the algebra.
None.
None, I didn’t know about it.
Sometimes, especially when I have time between classes.
Never, between work and school I don’t have time.
None.
7. Describe how you feel about learning Mathematics.
Basics are fine, but Algebra is what gets me. It’s a very great subject, but it’s hard to remember and understand.
It’s confusing.
Occasionally stressed…due to the past three years of high school math and I was unable to be caught up on.
Math isn’t my favorite subject, but I just do the best I can . I just try my hardest.
It’s fine I like it.
It’s okay sometimes, I try to take it serious but sometimes it’s hard.
At first I was really negative about it, but after I saw I could do it after all, my attitude improved and I wanted to learn it.
Math is hard, it has been a long time since I’ve had math.
It’s the backbone of all classes.
It’s too confusing.
We need it to make it in our lives.
Learning math is a time consuming subject.
I find it exciting.
I love math, just don’t remember it.
You need a certain amount of math on an everyday basis.
Enjoying remembering what I thought I forgot.
I love math, always have, but I have forgotten a lot of this stuff.
I don’t mind math. I don’t understand some it, but I don’t mind doing it. It’s important in our everyday lives.
I don’t really like it.
I don’t like it.
I’m just learning it because I need the grade to pass.
About half and half. Sometimes I am happy and sometimes I am mad.
It’s great when you know what going on.
I don’t much care for it.
8. What advice would you give fellow students to help them be successful in Developmental Mathematics?
Review what you have learned in the past and maybe after all that reviewing you’ll remember.
Come to class, listen.
Listen and ask questions.
Just to do the best that you can and listen closely. Try your hardest.
Just listen to what the teacher has to say.
Listen and pay attention, take notes, be good at what you do.
Have a very open mind. The first few days you may feel lost but give it time and it will “click”.
Attend classes regular, if you don’t understand ask questions.
To use tutors if they don’t understand something. Not to get behind.
Make sure you go to every class if at possible because you may miss something important that day.
Take your time. Read the problems carefully.
Attend class and practice what you cover.
Attend classes and be on time. Be prepared for each session , do homework, ask questions in class.
Pay attention, attend classes, ask questions, do homework, if you cannot do it, get help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Study hard.
Go to class and listen.
Ask for help/work together in groups.
Keep trying, learning and listening because everyone needs math skills to be successful.
Do your homework.
To try their best to get out of it while they can because it’s a waste.
Pay attention and do all your assignments.
Don’t give up trying and pay attention.
Remember the basics.
Just listen and pay attention.
