4. What could the instructor do to help all Developmental Math students?
· Walk us through it step by step explain why you do things and how to solve the problems easier. More instruction
· One on one but they do all they can
· Have a class tutor for personal help to students who lag somewhat without holding back the class and tying up the instructor
· Provide extra credit, offer extra time if needed do problems on the board and explain how to do it
· What your doing is fine I think
· To actually sit down and teach us, not just show us or do the work for us
· Maybe some more one on one help or have a helper to help them with their students
· Start with a survey of the most basic mathematics functions- some people are much further behind than others
· Go over the math problems a little better
· We have this class for a reason; we aren’t ready for college algebra yet. So its hard because the developmental math is really tough but the instructors need to go slow and explain thoroughly]
· Explain it slowly until we understand it
· Try to explain the problems more in depth
· Go slower not everyone learns at the same speed. Let students know that they are willing to help and that there are also tutors that will help
· More one on one time
· Let us work together sometimes so we can help each other
· Go slower and group work
· More lenient text
· Group work study classes
· I think the teacher I have does a real good. He explains everything clearly. He answers all questions and makes a way to make me understand
· Slow down
· Group work
· Group work
· Help individuals when needed
· Make sure the students understand all the steps to completing the math problems
· Just make sure they explain well, be patient! Don’t get frustrated if possible people that are usually in this class are either refreshing or haven’t had it at all
· Show more problems on the board (work out step by step) group work
· Spend more time explaining instead of chatting, stay on subject at hand till it is understood before moving on
· Keep loud students quieter
· Group work
· Group work, power comes in numbers!
· The instructor that I have now is Mark Lawson he does a wonderful job. He breaks things down and makes them simple
· Keep doing what Mr. Lawson is doing make sure we’re not all left behind
· Be more understanding and help if someone gets behind and just because a few know how to do things doesn’t mean everyone knows
· Get more math tutors on campus
· Doing good job already
5. What could SKCTC, the college, do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?
· Provide workbooks, calculators more in depth instruction
· They do all they can if you let them know you’re having a problem or need something
· Have in class tutor
· Have a meeting with the instructors about the things I listed before make sure they are enforcing it
· Make it where you could take the test alone so you can concentrate better not just on math but all of it
· Maybe have tutors during class
· More one on one – explain what that one kid has problems with
· A math lab ran by students more advanced people forget that others don’t know/understand certain concepts
· I have no idea
· Have the instructor take it 1 step at a time and not be rushed to just learn us and slow down and teach us
· The tutoring is great
· Have instructors that help explain the problems instead of just telling you to do it
· All my instructors are pretty good when it comes to helping their students. If an instructor is willing to help there is nothing more they can do
· Provide the usage of scientific calculators because they are so expensive to turn in after class like the high school does
· Have more study classes
· Longer classes
· Change the hours of the tutors. Have them at the Harlan campus all day instead of just a couple of hours
· Keep doing what they are doing
· Not require the instructor to cover so much that he or she is rushed thru it and the students can’t retain it because it is not enough time to allow to explain
· Provide calculators they are too expensive
· Provide calculators because they are too expensive
· Just being there for them, accepting when you miss class with good reason but as long as you will keep up
· Have Plato on this class
· At this time I am not sure, this is my first time attend this college and I am pleased with my instructor so far
· Practice work-take home test-gives you more time to do the test at your own pace and using the book helps you to understand the problems
· Make more tutors available
· I think they do a great job
· Provide calculators, they are too expensive
· More tutors at different times
· Offering the class in 8 weeks helps us not get burned out on math before we even start the math that counts toward our degrees
· More tutors to help students individually
· I think the do a great job
· Nothing
