Student Survey (Total for MT 110 & MT 115)

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) has committed to improving the success of students enrolled in Development Mathematics.  We ask that you please take a few minutes to give your valued opinions on the following questions.

Your identity will be anonymous.

Thank you.

1.      Did you enroll in a Developmental Math course at SKCTC?

·        Yes ___2___ No_8___ Currently enrolled_0_

2.      Describe, in your opinion, what made or makes you successful or unsuccessful.

·        Organization not procrastinating

·        I feel like the developmental math course helped me.  I wouldn’t have known anything about current math if I hadn’t taken the developmental class because I’m much older than most students.

·        Confidence

·        Be serious about learning

·        Class that can help me in my field of study

·        Successful doing something you enjoy and like to do, unsuccessful doing something that you dislike

·        Well what little I learned in high school is being brought back with the current class I am enrolled in right now and its beginning to be quite easy and helping in the field in am in right now

·        It depends on how educated I an on what I am trying to succeed at

·        What makes me successful is knowing that I have the opportunity to further my education to obtain a career that  I am interested in

·        What makes me successful is trying my best every time and to not fail

3.      Did you or do you attend classes regularly? (explain why or why not)

·        Yes, mon-fri

·        Yes I feel it s important not to miss class because it easy to fall behind

·        Yes- to further my education

·        Yes so I can learn

·        Yes to help me in the other class I am enrolled in

·        Yes because you can get a better job

·        Yes to try and get my skills back up to par so if there is a situation at which I may need to use this type of math to complete my job

·        Yes I have a full time schedule and I try to keep my attendance up.

·        Yes because when you miss a class, you get so far behind that sometimes it is hard to catch up and you miss a lot of the instructor’s notes that can help you, especially during test time.

·        Yes because I want to learn and it would be a waste of money and pointless to miss or skip

4.      What could the instructor do to help all Developmental Math students?

·        Give the students more individual time, go at a slower pace

·        Maybe move a little slower I had a hard time keeping up because they have to cover so much in such a little time period

·        Make themselves more available

·        Have a smaller class so the instructors can let one on one with his or her students

·        Be very understanding and try their best to help the students take things slow. Find out what they know and what don’t and focus on getting them to where they are capable of doing math that they need

·        Have more developmental math classes with smaller numbers of students so that there will be more one on one time between students and teachers

·        Be more patient and slow down when working through problems. Realize a need when they see it, especially for those students who have a hard time with math and take the time to help them

·        Explain problems better and take time to explain it besides assuming the student already knows. Check with each student individually and make sure he or she gets it before they move on to another subject problem

5.      What could SKCTC, the college, do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?

·        Hire more teachers to keep class size smaller

·        Have longer class periods

·        Offer more tutoring

·        Have more classes available at all schools

·        Keep working with them over and over again

·        Just kind of start where they don’t understand how to do it get them to where they understand most of it

·        Train the teacher to be more to teach more thoroughly and help students more when they don’t understand

·        Have more committed tutors available for all math classes

·        Make class interesting and not reticule the student and try to make them sound dumb. To make some students understand it not matter how long it takes

6.      How much do you use or do you use the Academic Support Center and tutors?

·        At least twice a week I use the computers I don’t get tutoring but it looks helpful

·        I used it very little because I work and I am really pressed for time

·        Often to do my homework

·        Very little

·        None, as a student didn’t have time with the other classes

·        None

·        Never, there hasn’t been any problem which I couldn’t get help from my instructor

·        Never, I never feel the need for a tutor or any other help

·        None- the tutor was busy with one student that he was unable to help any one else.  Our academic center is the lounge where a TV plays and there are pool games going on we need a room especially for academic support some place quiet that has at least three or four computers also

·        I don’t use it a lot because I don’t have too

7.      Describe how you feel about learning mathematics.

·        I have math anxiety even though I usually do well

·        I am nervous about it because I am older and math has changed a lot since I was in high school

·        Its very interesting

·        A little nervous

·        It is very difficult but rewarding when you learn something new

·        Its something I need to be successful in life and my job

·        Its not just the fact of learning its as if its mandatory but how you use it everyday whatever your doing especially of fields of work, it helps a lot

·        I need to learn more math.  My math skills are very limited.  I believe that math is the hardest subject to learn

·        Math is not a strong subject for me, but you can’t get through life without it, so it pays to learn as much as I can for may career

·        I don’t like it, but its something that I need to know

8.      What advice would you give fellow students to help them be successful in Developmental Mathematics?

·        If you don’t understand something do anything besides sit there and be quiet, ask questions!!

·        They should always attend class regular, and go to the academic support center when possible

·        Take your time and don’t get frustrated

·        Study and get tutoring

·        Just stay in the class, listen to the teacher and work very hard.

·        To ask for help

·        To pay attention and tell the instructor where they are having problems and what they need help with. Most of all if they get stuck and don’t know what to do be sure and ask for help

·        Try to participate in class as much as possible and always ask questions when not understanding something

·        Take notes- lots of them, pay attention in class, try to set up front so there are no distractions, and always be on time and present for class

·        To not let the instructors pass them up when they don’t understand something. Make them take the time to explain it and make sure the student gets it before they more on.
