2.  Describe, in your opinion, what made or makes you successful or unsuccessful.

In my opinion, what makes you successful is really putting an effort into your work.        Going the extra mile makes the difference.

I believe the teacher helps to make us successful or unsuccessful.  Mr. Phipps is a great teacher.

What makes you successful is accomplishing your goals that you set for yourself.  What makes you unsuccessful is not accomplishing goals.

            Studying helps me be successful.

I’m just starting out this semester, having a little trouble in math.  I guess I comprehend slower than most people but our teacher is excellent.

I have a hard time comprehending the problems out of class (unsuccessful was underlined)

A good instructor has made me more successful in Developmental Math.

A good math tutor would be good for success.

The tutoring service for mathematics.  The teacher shows concern.

            Successful, good teacher.

Coming to class and paying attention.

I am successful in math right now because I did not have to be in a class that was too hard for me.

            Short attention span.

Paying attention to what is going on and listen more to your instructor.

The poor teaching techniques in high school + middle school

Mr. Phipps makes math interesting + fun.

Just spending time on material and in some instances—hands on training.

            Determination and self-discipline

Me personally if I’m not doing math every day it tends to slip out of my mind.  2 classes a week makes it hard.

  1.  Did you or do you attend classes regularly?  (Explain why or why not)

Yes. I try to because I find that what is being taught in the classroom is very valuable.

Yes, I want to learn so I can make good grades.

Yes, because if you miss one class it will put you behind.

Yes, because if I don’t I will be behind.

Yes

Yes.

Yes, I attend on a regular basis.

Yes, because I want to succeed.

Yes, because I realize math builds one step on another.

Yes cause I like the class.

Yes!  If I miss, I get behind.

Yes I do.  I want to make good grades.

Yes, I’m poor at math.

Kinda because I stay sick a lot.

Yes, because I need the credit, and we are required to show up.

Yes, I attend regularly.  Because I need the review.

I currently attend class regularly.

Yes, I do attend class regularly.

Yes, if someone does not attend they fall behind.

Yes; you have to attend or you can’t pass.

4.  What could the instructors do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?

I think all of the instructors that I have had in math are really great.

I think they should explain slowly, + make sure most people understand.

Help us to understand by explanation + examples

Explain more     go in detail

I’m not sure how to go about doing PLATO—a little extra practice would probably help me a lot.

Some of the instructors could explain things a little better.

I think that maybe more class time would help in any subject.

Tutor us in spare time.

Be more strict on enforcing class attendance.

He is doing a real good job, but need more class time sometimes.

Be more helpful

Just make sure everyone understands everything before moving on.

One on one teaching

Get more teachers like Mr. Phipps.

Let us use our calculators

Spend an equal amount of time going over each subject.

Giving examples or analogies (making it fun)

I’m not sure.  Maybe try to be a “harder” less understanding instructor.

So far Mr. Phipps is a great instructor. No problems with him.

Give Real Good reviews before tests.

5.  What could SKCTC, the college, do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?

I think that there really isn’t a lot of things that they could do, it’s really left up to the individual.

Have more teachers like Mr. Phipps.

I don’t think they could do anything because I have already benefited from taking this class.

The college has a great math teacher his name is Mr. Phipps he explains every step.

I think it is really up to the students but also it would also help to have more tutoring labs.

Have more than one math tutor.  Appt. are being overlapped.

Have one on one tutors available.

Keep the tutors, make class sizes small for individual attention.

Give a little more time for the class.

Offer more tutors.

Nothing. You are doing great.

Require tutor appointments.

As I said in number 4 (get more teachers like Mr. Phipps)

Do away with the course completely.

Have tutoring for math students that really need the help.

Making sure the teachers thoroughly explain the work.

Maybe offer longer course hours.  More often a week.

Don’t really have a comment.

Make sure a student isn’t enrolled in classes they aren’t ready for.

6.      How much did you or do you use the Academic Support Center and tutors?

I’ve never really been to a math tutor because of the time conflict but Millard Robbins has been really great.

I don’t tutors are normally booked up when I’ve needed them.  I haven’t really needed one though.

None.

A lot, a lot.

Same as #4, its probably not as difficult as I think.

Not as much as I should have

I’m glad these services are available to aid in any help a person might need.

Very often.  Because it helps me in my academic success.

I have used them about once a week and others in my class go regularly.

A little but the teacher teaches good.

A lot!

I haven’t used it because I don’t need it yet.

No but I plan to.

I’ve not been yet. Not any reason to go yet.

None, unless instructed by the teacher

Very little.  I’m not too bad at math.

I haven’t had to have a tutor.

I use at least once or twice before an exam.

I go there almost everyday and if I have a problem, they thoroughly explain the exercises to me.

None so far but after awhile I’ll probably use the tutors.

7.  Describe how you feel about learning Mathematics.

Math is not my best subject, but I know its something I will need in the future.

I think a lot of it is pointless.

I’ve always done well in math, I only don’t do well on tests.

At first I hated it, but now it’s okay.

            It (Algebra) just seems huge.

I feel inadequate due to my inability to comprehend.

            It’s skill driven.

Hard + sometimes confusing.  But willing to learn.

At ease, since enrolling here.  I feel I am learning more with each class.

I myself hate math but it is needed.

            I hate it!

I feel it is a challenge, but that makes it fun.

            Confused.

            I like learning about it.

I don’t like math.  I’m good with the basics, but most of this is nonsense.  I will never use Algebra in my job.

I know we need to know the basics, which I already do.  I’m basically just taking it for the algebra credit.

As long as someone nice + patient is teaching it (such as Mr. Phipps) it’s no problem to learn.

I feel that I have a strong grasp on the concepts and enjoy working the problems.

            I love it!

If I’m not rushed and I do it everyday, I do well.

8.  What advice would you give fellow students to help them be successful in Developmental Mathematics?

I would stress how important it is to really apply yourself.

            Study

            Pay attention

Study, study, study, and study some more

Start at the bottom (beginning + work your way up)

            Study and concentrate

Attend regular class meeting because once you get behind it’s hard to keep up.

Study, do your homework, and ask questions.

Come to class, ask questions, see the tutors

Pay attention and do your work

Pay attention and attend class regularly

Keep trying until you figure out how to do it.

            Pay attention

Just start liking it, if not you won’t learn anything.

Just hope you can pass the compass test so you can get out of it.

Study everything, even if you know it.

1.      Come to class 2. Pay attention  3.  Do your homework!!

Just do a lot of practice exams.  Repeat, repeat, and repeat.  A memory function.

Be at class on time and regularly.  Don’t be shy to ask for help.

Pay attention in class!
