- Describe, in your opinion, what makes you successful or unsuccessful.
Just knowing if I do my best I really shouldn’t have anything to worry about
What makes me unsuccessful is my teachers in high school
Teachers in high school (unsuccessful circled)
Trying my hardest
I make myself successful and unsuccessful. If I try hard I can be as successful as I want to be. When I fail to try that is when I became unsuccessful.
What makes me successful is good teachers and paying attention and studying
It makes me successful because it helps me understand development math a lot better.
Successfulness is passing all my classes and going into a career I chose.
What makes me successful is that I come to class everyday and listen.
Unsuccessful—teachers in high school.
Having one on one contact with the teacher.
Feeling confident about themselves and the materials they know.
Determination
What makes me successful is when a teacher takes time to show me a problem, explain to me how to do it, that way I’m able to understand it better.
The Compass Test
In my opinion, attending class regularly and applying yourself makes you successful.
Being consistent in good use of time, being organized, and working hard despite setbacks.
2. Did you or do you attend classes regularly? (Explain why or why not)
Yes, because I don’t want to work all my life to get by. I want to have a lot of things in life so to do that I should be here regularly.
Yes!
Yes.
Yes, because I’m afraid I’ll miss something I need to know.
I try but it seems that something is always getting in the way.
Yes, cause it effects your grade.
Yes, I think it’s important.
I attend classes regularly the reason being is because I need to learn the basics of math and it’s once a week.
Yes, I attend classes as regularly as possible.
Yes, because it will effect your grade.
Yes because I don’t want understand the work and be farther behind.
Yes, I do because if you miss a class that’s a class of work or a lesson you’ve missed.
Yes, with hopes to be able to understand math better.
Yes, it’s required
Yes, because if you don’t attend regularly you can get behind, I don’t want to do that.
Yes, to learn more effectively.
I do when I can. The only reason I miss is my 2 infant children.
Yes.
Yes. I have not missed any classes in 1 ½ years of college. I’ve had good health, a vehicle, and I know I don’t want to get behind in my studies.
4. What could the instructors do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?
The instructors could be more like Mr. Breedlove because he makes class fun and you learn at the same time. He makes sure everyone knows and understands before he starts something new.
I think that my teachers should go over thing over and over instead of rushing.
Nothing. You have to want to learn.
Not keep us for 2 ½ hours but really nothing because it is the student who needs to apply themselves.
Encourage students to keep putting forth effort. Also to not get down on themselves when they mess up.
Explain stuff better.
Nothing. Don’t change anything.
Just keep explaining the math and its simplest form.
Take more time on explaining things that some of the students don’t understand.
Take more time going over the subject and materials.
More ex. More problems, more one on one time
If the student doesn’t understand something they could explain more better.
Have more teachers and less students per class.
Nothing.
Give the review at least 5 days prior to the test (I’m a very slow test taker because I like to make sure I have the very best answers).
Give home work, help students understand how to do it the right way.
Be patient, take their time, get to know all students.
Explain each operation even if it seems everyone gets it. Someone may not “get it” + is just too embarrassed to speak up.
Continue to understand all students have weak areas, and that often it is embarrassing. Encourage tutorial CD’s that come with the book.
5. What could SKCTC, the college, do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?
They could make the Compass test much more understandable and put you in the classes you need.
I think my teacher is doing a good job.
Nothing in the class, but be more specific on the Compass test.
Not put stuff on the Compass test that we don’t know how to do like trig.
Provide a better or easier way of understanding the concepts of math.
I think some of the math classes are way to long. Sitting in a class that long is hard.
Just keep the classes coming on.
?
Give more time to those who need help.
Smaller classes teacher to student ratio
Make the Compass test questions, questions not from pre-calculus
If they see a student having trouble with math try to help them understand it.
If I were asked if I needed a calculator and scrap paper for Compass it would have helped.
Give you more time to take the Compass.
Have more tutoring time.
Give credit for developmental classes.
I’m not sure. I know tutoring is available.
6. How much did
you or do you use the
I haven’t used it any, I don’t have time.
About once a week.
None. I get all I need out of class.
Hardly ever just when I write a paper.
I haven’t tried the tutors yet but I would be willing to give them a chance
I use the tutors about once every two weeks.
Never.
Right now I’m not using them much because it’s still early in the semester.
Not much.
Once a week for English. 10-15 min. at a time.
None, I’m fine in my classes.
Quit often for English pappers
Just for writing because it’s a requirement.
All the time, there very helpful.
NONE
A lot, but not necessarily in math—in a number of courses.
Did not use.
I just started.

I like it as long as I have a teacher that is enjoyable to be with and makes sure you have understood everything taught.
I don’t like it, but I am always up for learning something new.
I don’t like it but, I have to learn it.
I need to know it.
Math just don’t seem to get my attention.
I really don’t like it.
It’s fun. I really enjoy learning math.
I dread it because I’m not a strong math student
I think it’s very important because you use mathematics everyday + in most careers.
I like math. If my teachers in high school would have taught the way they do I wouldn’t be in this class.
Math is my favorite subject so I love it.
I have always enjoyed math.
Everyone needs it, so I do it.
It’s hard for me to learn, but that just makes it a better challenge.
I think its great help the students succeed in their math skills.
I’m not really a great math student, but I would love to learn.
Good.
I’m nervous because I’ve been out of school for a long time.
