QEP Minutes
January 13, 2006
Members in attendance: Odell Wilson, Chuck Sturgill, David Clutts, Wheeler Conover, Ruby Sparkman, Rick Mason, Millard Robbins, Peggy Conklin, and Joann Martin.
Haggerty opened the meeting by updating the committee on what she had learned at the SACS Annual Meeting in Atlanta. The update concerned student learning outcomes and their measurement. The committee agreed that the SACS representative should be contacted about the goals of the QEP to make sure they are consistent with what SACS is looking for.
Haggerty updated the committee on her recent collaboration with Hazard Community and Technical College’s QEP Chair. Southeast seems to have more composed at this time, but Hazard has had more luck working out a Title III grant. The committee agreed that QEP data could be used to provide data for a Title III grant, and Haggerty said she would look into it.
Haggerty updated the committee on QEP composition. The first draft had been written and reviewed by the SACS Leadership Team. She was unhappy with some of the data under Statement of the Problem and would be changed Desired Outcomes to Student Learning Outcomes as much as possible. There was some concern that some of the QEP goals dealing with advising and adjunct faculty relationships could not easily be connected to student learning outcomes. However, it was noted by Robbins that the purpose of changing the advising structure was to help make students more independent, which could be measurable.
The committee then discussed the need for publicity. Several of the sessions at the SACS Annual Meeting included information about publicizing the QEP before the SACS visit. It was decided that faculty/staff input was needed again on the basics of the plan to make sure they were “buying in” and not forgetting about the QEP’s existence. Haggerty also shared some of the publicity techniques other schools reported using.
Haggerty closed the meeting by reminding the members that any comments about projects should not only come to her but to the author of the project.
