Quality Enhancement Planning (QEP)
Committee Meeting
August 12, 2005
The QEP committee meeting was called to order by Chairman Robin Haggerty at 1:30 p.m. The following members were present:

Minutes from the August 4, 2005 minutes were approved, the motion made by Dr. Odell Wilson and seconded by Peggy Conklin.
Robin Haggerty announced that the SACS Visiting Committee is to come in October, so the due date for the final draft to be submitted is September 1, 2006. Minutes and reports from the subcommittee will need to be posted online so that the Visiting Committee will have easy access to those documents– Robin will get in touch with Gary Gibson to arrange this. Members should send Robin their drafts in Microsoft Word format.
The subject of collecting student attendance data was discussed, persons responsible for the collection of attendance data are as follows:
Harlan – Chuck Sturgill
Whitesburg – Ron Brunty
Middlesboro – Joe Sutton
Cumberland – Ruth Lewis
David Clutts passed out a list of articles on the Best Practice Issues for Data Collection.
Dr. Odell Wilson’s Priority and Corrective Strategies were explained by him and discussed by the Committee. Also, Student and Faculty Surveys were presented and suggestions for modification were made. Dr. Wilson will change the Surveys as discussed. The Faculty Survey will be distributed at the August 19 Faculty Meeting, and the Student Surveys are planned to be given to students the week of September 12-16.
The Committee will review the revised Student Survey on August 26th.
Competencies for KCTCS Math courses were distributed by Dr. Wilson.
Joann Martin reported that she had talked with instructors of Allied Health courses, and they told her that students were having trouble with fractions, decimals, and the Metric system. The Committee recognized that the problem could be that students have forgotten the basics, and those skills needed to be reinforced. Martin will provide the Committee with sample nursing math tests from the past two years at the August 26th meeting.

Millard Robbins discussed LifeMap strategies that have been implemented by Valencia Community College, related to the advisor and student, with the goal of the student taking over his own goals after initial help from the advisor.
Peggy Conklin gave a report on the guidelines of placement at other colleges, and how other colleges prepare students to take the COMPASS and ACT tests. Walters State Community College has developed their own “pre-test” and “post-test” for developmental classes, and Ashland Community College provides a “challenge opportunity” for early exit from developmental classes.
Names for Lead Evaluators were discussed.
Rick Mason handed out data pertaining to Institutional Research.
The next meeting was scheduled for Friday, August 26 at 1:30 PM.
