Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College
QEB Meeting
August 26, 2005
The QEP meeting was held on the Harlan Campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College on August 26, 2005
Robin Haggerty, Rick Mason, Wheeler Conover, Odell Wilson, Millard Robbins, David Clutts, Chuck Sturgill and Joann Martin were in attendance
Robin Haggerty began the meeting by asking if anyone had additions to the agenda. Haggerty then added an additional item to the agenda. The addition to the agenda was to choice a lead evaluator; the choices were 1) Bob Chaney 2) Patrick Bibby 3) Barbara Bonham. Bibby and Chaney were chosen.
Research Update
Robin Haggerty announced that she had requested rosters marked by developmental faculty for midterm reports from all five campuses and that she had received word that information would be available from Cumberland and Harlan. The rosters from the Middlesboro and Whitesburg Campuses would be available in the future. She suggested using information that Rick Mason had gathered from the faculty survey of developmental math instructors (Rick sent all developmental math faculty rosters from the previous semester asking them to identify why students had failed) to identify students who had been unsuccessful from last semester may be used to get feedback from students who had been unsuccessful.
David Clutts distributed his handouts that he had gathered and asked for feedback.
1) Organization
2) Administrative Components
3) Instructional Practices
He commented that professional development should be in a category by itself. Clutts asked everyone to look over his research to date and respond to him via email.
Faculty Surveys
Haggerty stateed that there was a good response to the faculty survey. Odell Wilson responded by showing data from the Cumberland Campus survey. The results of the data included the importance of attendance and tutorial assistance. One comment on the surveys brought up the drop out rate after financial aid was distributed. However, no real data is available at this time on how many drop-out after the distribution of aid. It will be available at the end of the Fall 2005 term with the data collected from the attendance study currently being conducted.
Approval for Student Survey
Haggerty opened discussion of the student survey to be distributed the week of September 12. One change to the survey was made. Number 6 was changed to state: How much do you use the academic support center and tutors and why or why not? Student surveys will be distributed between September 12, 2005 and September 16, 2005.
Allied Health
Nursing students have math integrated into the courses of their first year of study. In the second year students take a math exam. If they pass the first exam the first time, they do not have to re-take the exam a second or third time. However, if a student fails the exam on the first try, he or she will have two other opportunities to pass. If a student fails the third exam he or she will receive an unsatisfactory. No organized plan is in place for students who fail the exams. Wilson noted that the number of students who “fail” is statistically insignificant. Committee discussion centered on whether student performance in Allied Health programs could be tied to the QEP. The decision was made to revisit Allied Health programs at a later date in order to determine if students are actually failing in other programs due to their lack of math ability/preparation.
QEP Topic Sentence & Paradigm of Success
Robin Haggerty suggested that a draft topic sentence for QEP be decided upon. It is proposed that the sentence be; “To Develop a Program to Improve the Success Rate of Students Enrolled in Developmental Math Courses with a Special Emphasis on Helping to Improve the Rate of Success in Applied Math and College Algebra.”
Haggerty handed out copies of a rough draft of Wilson’s previously proposed “Paradigm of Success” for faculty review. It contained both a rough draft of the QEP topic, a definition of student learning, and various ways the “Paradigm of Success” could be interpreted to articulate the goal of the QEP.
In closing it was decided that the committee be divided up as follows:
David Clutts & Odell Wilson—Math subcommittee (instructional strategies)
Peggy Conklin & Robin Haggerty—Developmental Program/Scheduling
Chuck Sturgill & Millard Robbins—Advising subcommittee
Joann Martin & Robin Haggerty--Allied Health
Next meeting will meet on the Cumberland Campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College of September 9, 2005
