QEP Meeting Minutes
August 1, 2006

There were no additions to the agenda.

The meeting began with a discussion of the organization of the QEP.  Haggerty provided the most recent Table of Contents and discussed the reasons for moving material.  Choosing the QEP Topic and QEP Related Activities had been moved to earlier in the draft for the sake of narrative coherence.  The committee approved the changes.

Haggerty discussed changes made to the illustration of A Paradigm of Success. The changes were made based on the suggestions of Robin Lambert, a QEP consultant.  She explained that the circles could now be seen as permeable, the role of the College would be clearer, and success would be more clearly defined.  The committee agreed to the changes.

Haggerty then provided pages 37-39 of the QEP for discussion. Those pages contained the improved description of the Paradigm based on changes made to the illustration.  The committee approved the description.

The discussion then moved to working with Goal 2, which Robin Lambert had been specifically asked to address in her review of the QEP.  The committee discussed each of her recommendations but decided to keep only the last one.  The first two would have been difficult to achieve with an all commuter population and small enrollment.  The last strategy, to develop a service learning component or community based component for a developmental math class, seemed most innovative and achievable, especially to the math faculty on the committee.

David Clutts confirmed that the Betz & Hackett MATHS Inventory would be used to measure Goal 3.

Haggerty discussed the QEP initiatives beginning in Fall 2006 which included: identifying at-risk students, using Academic Success Advisors, and beginning the Attendance/Persistence Project on the Middlesboro Campus.

The committee discussed publicity for the QEP. Flyers will go up in September; post-cards to students will go out about 2 weeks before the SACS visit and the student newspaper will write a story about the QEP and SACS visit.  Haggerty reminded the committee members that they are the best salespeople to get faculty, staff and students excited about the upcoming changes.

The committee discussed the need to review the basics of the QEP before the SACS visiting committee arrives.  Haggerty confirmed the visit would be Oct. 10-12 and provided copies of “Assessing the Quality Enhancement Plan” from The On-Site Review Process.  The committee agreed that another meeting may be needed, but that the time and date would be determined in September.
