Southeast Kentucky community and Technical College (SKCTC) has committed to improving the success of students enrolled in Developmental Mathematics.  We ask that you please take a few minutes to give us your valued opinions on the following questions.  Your identity will be anonymous.  Thank you.

  1. Do you teach a Developmental Math course at SKCTC?

  1. Describe in your best opinion, what makes students successful or unsuccessful in passing a Developmental Math course.
    1. Attending the class, doing the work and paying attention to the instructor.
    2. Attendance.
    3. Attitude
    4. Student must want to do good
    5. Must understand concept of Developmental Courses
    6. A teacher and system that can key into different learning styles.  A teacher who understands math disabilities.
    7. Instructor approach ability
    8. How it relates to the program area they are in
    9. After a few weeks the student gets bored and is not encouraged to continue.

  1. What could the instructors do to help all Developmental Math students be more successful?
    1. Have a strict attendance policy
    2. Take more interest in students.  I feel some of our teachers look down on students.
    3. Explain it much much better
    4. Stress how important it is to be in class
    5. Develop a stronger tutor system.  Require mandatory placement
    6. Have planned study sessions and require low scoring students to attend
    7. Stress the importance of math in their lectures and labs.
    8. Encourage students all year long to use the facilities etc. to their good.
    9. Start with basic math skills, for example multiplications, then build from there.
    10. Make sure they start out at a level the students feel comfortable with.

5.        What could SKCTC do to help Developmental Math students be more successful?

1.      Hire a developmental math coordinator who has a masters or doctorate in the field.

2.      Disperse financial aid in at different times

3.      Offer all Developmental classes at every campus – not just a few

4.      Offer more Developmental classes

5.      No exception to act/compass scores for entering classes

6.      Offer MT55 & MT065 on all campuses

7.      Tutors should visit class and introduce themselves so students have a face to put with a name

8.      Allow more one on one time for students

9.      Have a place and tutors set aside where they can get help any time during the day.   And teachers encourage students all year long to use.

10.  Provide individual tutors, if student are doing poorly make it mandatory for at least 15 min. a day.

11.  Provide Math work shops with small numbers of students and more than one tutor.

6.        How much, in your observation, do students use the Academic Support Center and tutors?

                   1.  Less than they need to.

                   7.  On the Harlan Campus it is very limited.  They do use the Adult Ed. Pretty        regularly.

                   8.  Those who score low must, they are usually the only ones.

                   9.  Very little.  They are not encouraged to use them like they should.

7.            Describe how you think students feel about learning Mathematics.

1.      They hate it, fear it or both

3.      don’t understand concept of math

4.      The phobia begins early and is hard to overcome.  Many feel no use for algebra or geometry.

5.      They are afraid of it.  I think in every instance they are intimidated by the computer testing medium we use for placement.  This causes them to be placed lower than they actually need and they become frustrated.

6.      Some have a hard time relating and have little help from home.

7.      Most don’t like it but the ones that can see where they need math try harder.

8.      It’s dull, boring, according to students.

9.      They want to learn math, but do not want to be singled out.

8.            What advice would you give students to help them be successful in Developmental Mathematics?

1.      Attend class and focus

2.      Work at it harder and attend classes

3.      Attend classes and listen to advice

4.      Work at it and wand to get better

5.      Attend attend attend.

6.      Expect needed classes to be taught day and night on all campuses.  Keep trying and trying so you can accomplish your goal.

7.      Use the tutors and don’t be afraid to ask questions of the instructor.  They all have office hours.  Utilize this resource.

8.      Study hard, and stay with it, use the tutors, if needed.

9.      Try to show them where they use math in their career fields.

10.  Do a career exploration. Discover how math is used in that profession; decide what you must accomplish in math to succeed.

11.  Be sure to ask if they do not understand.
