Proposed Partnership between Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College/QEP Oversight and Adult Education (ABE/GED) Programs

in Bell, Harlan, and Letcher Counties

Purpose/Goal:  To reduce the number of students who have to take the complete sequence of developmental math courses offered by SKCTC

Action 1:  Develop, in partnership with GED/ABE, a series of PLATO math lessons, which if reviewed, may substantially increase number skills/elementary algebra skills on COMPASS or ACT.  Who will be involved?  SKCTC math faculty and Adult Education faculty/staff,.

Action 2:  Use the PLATO lesson plans as part of Math Review and Running Start, both QEP initiatives geared toward lessening student need for remediation in math skills for incoming freshmen.

Math Review

Purpose:  Math Review is intended to help lower the number of incoming freshmen who need to take the complete sequence of developmental math courses.

Who will/can participate?  All incoming freshmen who will need to take the COMPASS math placement test.

How will Math Review work?

  1. Students who will need to take the COMPASS math placement test will be identified by TABE testing, high school guidance counselors and Admissions.
  2. Students will be sent to Adult Education (ABE/GED).
  3. Students will be tested using TABE in order to gain access to PLATO.
  4. After completing the PLATO assessment, students will receive individual PLATO lesson designed to correct their areas of weakness.
  5. Students will be encouraged to work in the Adult Education lab areas.
  6. Students will be post- tested on TABE and COMPASS after Math Review is completed.
  7.  Each student will be able to present a certificate to the testing administrator and their advisor noting the number of hours of PLATO he/she completed.

Benefits:

  1. Students will be able to review in either the Adult Education lab areas or on their own.
  2. Students will have reviewed basic math before placement testing
  3. Adult Education will be able to test and work with a number of students.

 Keys to Success:

  1. Interaction with Adult Education staff
  2. Flexibility of PLATO

Running Start

Purpose:  To help remediate high school students’ math skills before they graduate.

Who will participate in Running Start?  High school students who have completed the ACT PLAN and show a need for remediation in math.  Pilot school will need to be Pineville High School or Bell County High School.

How will Running Start work?

1.      Student need will be determined by performance on ACT PLAN

2.      Students who will be participating will take the TABE in order to be able to use PLATO

3.      Students will receive the PLATO math lesson list (will these folks need an expanded list?)

4.      Students will work with high school math faculty and PLATO to complete the math lesson list.

5.      Once the lesson list is complete, students may retest on the COMPASS.

   Benefits:

  1. Students will be able to review with instructors or on their own.
  2. Students will have reviewed basic math before placement testing
  3. Adult Education will be able to test and work with a number of students.

Keys to Success:

  1. Working with students before they graduate.
  2. Closer working relationship with high school instructors

Questions:

1.      Can adult education benefit?

2.      Will the high schools want this during the regular school day or during summer school?

3.      How involved will Adult Education faculty and staff need to be?
