About the Challenge Exam

The Challenge Exam (ASSET) is a test that students can take to affirm placement in developmental courses. The QEP will improve placement by providing students opportunities to review their math skills and retest before class begins. In addition, a challenge exam will give students a chance to prove their math skills and potentially be placed in a higher level course. One of the benefits of using the ASSET as the challenge exam is that the test will be given using paper and pencil. Students often complain that the computer (COMPASS at Southeast is a computerized adaptive test) has misplaced them or that they did not understand fully how the computer works. Using PeopleSoft (student data system used by Southeast) to block incorrect placement combined with the Challenge Exam should take care of both student and faculty concern that the original COMPASS has a back-up and that students have an avenue to move forward if it is warranted.
