College faculty help make Boy Scout event success Faculty from Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College were involved recently with the annual Boy Scout Merit Badge Fair held on the campus at Middlesboro.
The event, which featured the involvement of 96 scouts from the 8-county Mountain Laurel District, began with welcoming remarks by SKCTC President Dr. W. Bruce Ayers.
Scouts, during the event, earned 248 merit badges and also did partial completion on 82 additional badges, reported Professor Gary L. Steenbergen, college faculty member and one of the event coordinators.
Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College faculty who worked to make the event a success included, Steenbergen, architecture and drafting; Astor Simpson, bird study; Wheeler Conover and Barry Nichols, chemistry; Ismail Eldahan, computers; Mark Whited, electronics; David Clutts, family life; Rebecca Miller, first aid; Don Webb, graphic arts; and Jerry Hodge, truck transportation.
The evening before the fair, scouts camped out at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park braving temperatures in the 20s.
“It was a very successful event,” noted Steenbergen. “We wish to thank all who took part and for their time and hard work spent working with the scouts ensuring that the 2005 fair was a bona fide triumph.”
