Academic Advantage Program Sponsors Essay Contest

The Academic Advantage Program, a Student Support Services program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, recently sponsored and coordinated an essay contest to celebrate National Women’s History Month. Students on all five campuses were invited to submit essays on the topic “Women Change America”.

Some students wrote about famous women including Naomi Judd, Amelia Earhardt, and Betsy Ross; other students wrote about women in their own lives including grandmothers, mothers and teachers.

Amy Sexton, academic coordinator for academic advantage, announced the winners of the essay contest at the Tri-Cities Women’s Club Nation Women History Program on March 28.

First prize went to Alma Taylor of Cumberland for her moving essay about the woman who has changed her life, her grandmother, Oma Graham. Alma was awarded a scholarship worth $267 to complete a course at SKCTC during the summer term. Second Prize went to Michelle Coffey, a student from Harlan, wrote an essay reflecting on the achievements and contributions of country music star Naomi Judd. Chasity Hatfield of Cumberland received 3rd place recognition for her essay praising her mother for inspiring her to pursue a degree in the medical field.

The Academic Advantage Program sponsors this contest annually. The Director of Academic Advantage is Carolyn Sundy and the staff includes Shelia Gordon, Counselor; Diane Fain, Transfer/Career Counselor; David Clutts, Math/Skills Specialist and Pat Baker, Information Records System Analyst.
