"Southeast students observe national medical assistants week " Students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College who are enrolled in the medical
assisting program took part recently in a national observance honoring those who play vital roles and
provide professional excellence in the delivery of quality healthcare to patients.
Medical assisting students at SKCTC observed the week of Oct. 18-22 as
National Medical Assistants Week with a declaration signed by Joe Grieshop,
Harlan County Judge Executive. The judge, appearing with students and the
college?s President Dr. W. Bruce Ayers, signed the proclamation at the Harlan
campus.
Leann Turner, faculty member and the program coordinator, mentioned that
the curriculum is a three-semester diploma program. Students who decide to do
so can continue with their studies and receive the associate in applied science
degree.
Medical assistants certified by the American Medical Technologists Society
must pass an exam and have the required education and experience to receive
the certification. A medical assistant is a multi-skilled professional who combines
clinical and administrative responsibilities to assist in all aspects of medical
practice in a physician?s office, hospital, clinic, government agency or laboratory.
In observance of National Medical Assistants Week, the Southeast
Kentucky Community and Technical College medical assisting students
conducted several community service events during the chosen week.
According to Mrs. Turner, the students, in addition to participating in the
proclamation signing, conducted a health fair on the Harlan campus where they
provided blood pressure checks, eye exams, and information on colon
screenings, audio screenings and blood glucose tests.
Members of the class also hosted a campus-wide brunch, and provided a blood
pressure clinic at the Harlan Wal-Mart. Students closed the week by treating the
residents of Britthaven of Tri-Cities to an ice cream social.
