College to hold December graduation ceremony

For the first time in its 47-year history, Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will conduct a graduation ceremony for students who complete diploma and degree requirements during the fall semester.

Scheduled for December 7 at 4 p.m. in the Edsel Godey Appalachian Center Theater located on the Cumberland Campus, graduation is expected to involve 100-125 students, according to Karin Gibson, registrar.

Ms. Gibson explained that while students who completed degree and diploma requirements in December have always been invited to participate in the graduation ceremony scheduled in May, very few of them had chosen to do so.

“We felt that since so many could not take part in the May ceremony that we owed it to

them—as well as to their families—to ensure that they had the opportunity to participate in

graduation nearer to the time they were actually finishing their programs of study.”

Gibson also noted in the past few years as the college has grown to five campuses and over 4,500 students, a number of students and family members had inquired about a December graduation ceremony, and that college officials believed that it would be very well received.
