College newspaper is winner in statewide competition
The Southeasterner, the student-produced newspaper of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, won several awards during the Kentucky Community and Technical College System’s Newspaper Contest.
The Southeasterner won first place in the News Story category, a piece written by Amber Jones-Williams, Cumberland campus, about Southeast’s name change. A second place was awarded to James C. Polly, of Whitesburg, for a review of the film “Elizabethtown,” and a second place was also awarded to the staff in the Page Layout category.
The paper’s sponsor, faculty member Carlton W. Hughes, noted his pleasure with the efforts of the students. “I am extremely proud of this group of students,” he said. “Their hard work and determination deserved to be recognized on a statewide level.”
The Southeasterner, which is enjoying its 40th anniversary this year, publishes several volumes each semester which are distributed to campuses at Cumberland, Whitesburg, Harlan, Pineville and Middlesboro.
