FAQ

How do I apply?

Application to the program is by nomination only. A student's teachers, guidance counselors, or principal may make the nomination. Students are chosen for the program by a selection committee made up of SKCTCS faculty and staff from the three county campuses.

What are the obligations that Southeast Scholars are expected to fulfill?

If selected as a Southeast Scholar, students are expected to fulfill certain obligations. Completion of the Southeast Scholars Program is dependent upon whether or not students meet these obligations. These requirements include (but are not limited to), students and their parent/guardian signing a contract outlining stipulations expected of Southeast Scholars and their families, attending regularly scheduled meetings and workshops, participating in an annual, week long summer institute, and communicating with Southeast Scholars staff in a timely manner.

What rewards do students receive?

Each Southeast Scholar will receive guaranteed books and tuition to Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College for up to three years. Eligibility is determined by successful high school graduation and meeting Southeast Scholars Program requirements.

How is the program funded?

Funding for this program is made by private donations to the college and specialized fundraising events.

Can I volunteer to mentor?

Yes. Rewarding opportunities to serve as a mentor to a Southeast Scholar are available. Mentors must be willing to donate at least six, two to four hour sessions each year at events sponsored by SKCTCS. Time involved with students may increase as the student nears graduation. Mentors may be anyone in Southeast's immediate or surrounding area that is willing to donate time to help prepare a student for higher education and serve as a role model for that young person.
