NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE

If a student believes that his/her academic rights have been violated, the process that  should be followed in seeking resolution is defined in the Code of Student Conduct, Section 2.4.1.1 [1].  The guidelines outline that the student should notify the division chair in writing concerning his/her grievance.  If the matter cannot be resolved by the chair, it is referred to the president of the college. Should the president not be able to resolve the matter to the student’s satisfaction, the student has the option of requesting a hearing before the college’s Appeals Board.

If a written complaint is received by SKCTC concerning academic issues—other than the academic rights of the student—the complaint is resolved by the Dean of Academic Affairs; if a written complaint is student related, the Dean of Student Affairs will handle it.  Both deans work closely with campus directors to resolve complaints, be they written or verbal.

Those students who feel that they have been discriminated against or subjected to harassment by other students or by college employees because of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, age, religion, beliefs, or veteran status have the right to file either an informal or formal grievance.  The process that should be followed in such cases is outlined in the Student Handbook (pp.27, 28) [2] and is available on the SKCTC website [3].

Please see [4] for an example of the way in which a written complaint was handled at SKCTC.
