NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) offers (1) the Associate in Arts and Sciences (AA/AS) degree—designed specifically for students who will transfer to 4-year institutions—and (2) the Associate in Applied Science degree for students who expect to immediately enter the workforce following graduation [1].

The AA /AS degree requires at least 60 credit hours with specific area requirements embedded within the program.  The AAS degree requirements range from 60 to 76 semester credit hours, including 15 to 27 hours of general education.  The requirements for program completion are consistent with policies established by the Board of Regents [2] and by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education [3].

The curriculum approval process at the college, as outlined in comprehensive standard 3.4.1, ensures that the length of programs is consistent with outcomes that are established by program faculty; and will meet the needs of students at the next level, be that transfer to a 4-year college or entry into the workforce.  Student performance at senior institutions [4], their success on licensure examinations [5], and employer satisfaction with graduates’ work performance [6] all help in determining if program length is appropriate for degrees offered.

Many of the AAS degree programs contain embedded certificates; pages 67-69 of the Catalog describe in detail the various academic credentials along with the requirements for each [7].
