NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
SKCTC offers a diverse and comprehensive curriculum that supports the college’s mission and goals [1] and leads to student attainment of an academic credential—degree, diploma, or certificate—or assists them in meeting other personal goals and objectives.
Specifically, the college provides:
The Associate in Arts or Sciences (AA / AS) degrees in support of the Institution’s transfer mission, providing students with the first two years of pre-baccalaureate degree programming;
The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree, a credential that prepares students for immediate entry into the work force;
Certificate programs—some imbedded within degree programs—and diploma programs, designed to assist students with job preparation;
Customized business and industry training;
Educational opportunities through developmental education, adult basic education program, community service, and continuing education.
The SKCTC Schedule of Classes provides a detailed listing of all academic programs as well as the courses that are offered in each of the college’s five campuses [2]. The KCTCS Catalog (pp. 67-69) [3] describes in detail both the rationale and the requirements for degrees, certificates and diplomas.
The SKCTC Program Development Committee offers recommendations on the appropriateness of curricula and other instructional matters. Their recommendations are considered by the faculty as a whole, through the faculty assembly (called The Faculty at SKCTC). Additionally, as part of the internal review process, the college evaluates each of its academic programs on an annual basis, assuring that there is continuous review in order that adjustments—when necessary—can be made on a timely basis [4].
The college provides customized courses to support student needs—as well as those of business and industry—in its service area. A number of specialized courses are offered each semester in support of coal miners and the mining industry. On many occasions, these courses are taken directly to the mine site and employ the latest technology applications. Course work is also provided in several other areas, including health care, business, and heavy equipment operation, the latter a special program offered in support of the National Park Service.
A full complement of developmental courses is offered at the college to help in the preparation of students who are academically under-prepared. Moreover, the college attempts to offer courses at times which are convenient for students. Recently, weekend / evening programs have been launched in medical coding, medical transcription and license practical nursing. SKCTC also offers a wide array of courses through distance learning and on-line formats. A review of the Schedule of Classes will demonstrate the “expanded” nature of the curriculum offerings [5].
