NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
Consistent with our mission as an open-door, open admissions college, SKCTC provides student services focused on meeting all students where they are and helping them reach their goals. Student services and support programs include: On-Line Orientation, initial advising for potential students, tours for potential students, admissions, placement testing, pre-advising and registration, financial aid and financial aid advising, evaluation of transfer credit, counseling services, career counseling services and career exploration, Introduction to College course, student activities, student government, resolution of student code of conduct issues, transcripts, certifications of enrollment, and graduation [1]. Additional services are available to eligible groups, including disability services [2], GED preparation [3], Veterans Affairs [4], Student Special Services [5], and Ready to Work program [6]. Additional information on our services is included in the schedule of classes, student handbook and the student services section of the SKCTC homepage [1].
Students enrolled in distant education classes can access available student services through the SKCTC homepage [7]. The Student Services section on the homepage will guide them through a range of services available and includes information about admissions, job placement, counseling, disability resources, financial aid, career planning, student activities and veterans affairs. From the homepage, students can also access Student Self Service Records Access, which provides them with information in the following areas:
The primary means of communicating with distant learning students is through email. All students are assigned an email address. The College also has a toll-free number (1-888-274-7322) that students can use to access any office or get in touch with a faculty member.
A survey of students who completed On-Line Orientation for Fall 2004 indicated that 97percent (307 students) stated that the orientation provided them with useful information on programs and services offered at SKCTC. The survey also indicated that 96 percent (305 students) stated that the orientation provided them with knowledge of which office to contact if they needed help or assistance. A total of 303 students (90 percent) stated that the orientation provided them with useful information about the financial aid programs offered at SKCTC [8].
The graduate Exit Survey is used to measure student satisfaction of our services. This instrument is a local survey administered at the point of application for graduation, allowing us to gather feedback from all students exiting with a credential. Over 90 percent of the respondents to the May 2004 survey [9] indicated that they were satisfied with the following services: Admissions; Career Services; Counseling Services; Disability Services; Financial Aid; and Registration. They also indicated that they were satisfied with computing resources, campus security and clarity of program requirements. In regard to student learning and enhancement of student development, the survey indicated the following: 94 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC provided them with skills at getting along with people of different cultures and philosophies; 78.7 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC provided them with skills to learn on their own; 96.2 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added to their ability to lead or guide others; 97.6 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added to their self confidence in verbally expressing their ideas. 96.8 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added to their self confidence in expressing ideas in writing; 95.9 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added to their ability to plan and carry out projects; 87.8 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added the ability to understand environmental concerns; 93.7 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added to their ability to examine ethical issues and values; and 96.1 percent indicated that the education they received at SKCTC added to their ability to use computers in practical situations.
The Introduction to College course (GE 100) provides the most direct evidence that student services promote student learning and enhance the development of students. GE 100 is an 8 week course designed to introduce students to support services that we have available and to teach specific skills that will contribute to student success in college. All full-time entering Freshman are required to take this course.
We take pride in the fact that 98.6 percent of the respondents to the 2004 Exit Survey indicated that employees of the college cared for them as individuals.
