NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College has an active Professional and Organizational Development Committee whose mission is “To develop and maintain a comprehensive program for the professional, personal and organizational growth of faculty and staff.” [1]   Further, the priority initiatives of the POD Committee are to:

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College is committed to developing excellence in teaching and learning through a comprehensive program for professional growth and development of faculty and staff.  This commitment is further evidenced by inclusion as an Institutional goal in the college’s strategic plan for 2002-2007 [2].

A professional development chairperson is identified on each of the College’s five campuses.  The campus chairs are responsible for identifying the needs and arranging for professional development workshops at their respective campuses [3].   Although developed and arranged for the individual campus, the workshops are open to all campuses.  Additionally, campus-wide activities are organized by the committee which include a three day in-service held each August [4], and a technology “boot camp” held each May [5].

Funding for travel for professional development is available through the Carl D. Perkins local plan, through an endowment from the John Presley fund, and through Institution funds [6].   Faculty are encouraged to seek out workshops, conferences, and training in their discipline.

The Professional Development Committee has developed a web site to further communicate professional development opportunities for faculty and staff [7]. The site includes a PD calendar for all campuses, procedures to request professional development funds, and a process for printing a transcript of professional development activities.
