NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
The College’s general education core-requirements for all associate degree programs require a minimum of fifteen to thirty-three credit hours. The general education core required for an Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degree is comprised of Writing/Accessing Information, Oral Communication (including Speech), Mathematics, Science, Social Interaction (including anthropology, political science, psychology, sociology, economics, or geography), Heritage/ Humanities (including history, literature, art, art history, music, philosophy, and foreign language), and Computer Literacy. The general education core ensures that graduates of associate degree programs are competent in reading, writing, oral communications, fundamental math skills, and the basic use of computers. To deliver these competencies, the faculty have identified courses that provide the opportunity to acquire and develop these basic skills. These courses are listed on page 68-72 of the KCTCS 2005-2006 Catalog [1]. The competencies are integrated throughout the general education program. Course syllabi outline objectives, minimum learning outcomes, assessment, and evaluation methods.
SKCTC is a partner along with the Council on Postsecondary Education and other public state universities in the Kentucky Baccalaureate Transfer Frameworks [2], which is designed to facilitate effective and efficient transfer of credits in the general education core and in over 200 bachelor’s degree programs.
Through the Kentucky General Education Block Transfer Policy, established in KRS 164.583 [3], students who have completed a general education program of 48 semester credit hours, which includes the 33 credit hour Core and additional Institutional-specific general education courses (15 semester credit hours) with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher receive “general education certified” status. Students who have completed the 33 credit hour Core or only some areas of the Core can be certified only in the Core or an area-by-area basis. For example, a student who has completed the nine-hour Behavioral Science/ Social Interaction requirement may be certified as having met the nine-hour Behavioral Science/ Social Interaction certification requirement.
Associate of Applied Science graduates who successfully complete the required 15 semester credit hour general education core attain, at a minimum, competencies in Humanities/Fine Arts, Social/Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Science/Mathematics.
The Catalog and individual SKCTC student academic plans [4] identify the general education core requirements. All SKCTC courses, regardless of delivery method, include opportunities for meeting general education competencies. The course syllabi for core general education courses [5] state the minimum college-level competencies for general education. Successful course completion is one indicator of competency attainment. The awarding of a degree is additional evidence that the graduate has attained the general education core competencies.
