NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College provides a comprehensive program of academic support services.

Beginning with COMPASS Placement Testing, the student’s introduction to SKCTC is designed to ensure him / her of the Institution’s commitment to helping each individual to succeed academically.  Following the receipt of placement test results, the student’s advisor meets with him / her to discuss / interpret the results and to work with the student in determining a course schedule for the upcoming semester.  If students’ scores suggest deficiencies, advisors adhere to the College’s placement policy for guidance [1].

In order to ensure that students are aware of the wide array of support services available to them, the College requires that all incoming freshmen complete GE 100, Introduction to College [2].  This one-hour course is completed during the first eight weeks of the semester.  Emphasis is placed on academic support services, especially in the areas of math and English.

The College operates full-service academic skills centers on its Cumberland, Middlesboro, and Whitesburg campuses; and in Cumberland and Middlesboro these laboratories work cooperatively with Adult Basic Education Laboratories, while on the Harlan Campus students are able to receive assistance primarily through the ABE Center.  Students on the Pineville Campus are able to access services through the Middlesboro Campus, which is located less than eight (8) miles away and where many Pineville students also take classes.

Using general fund revenues as well as funds from Title II C (Perkins) and Title IV (Special Services), the College employs a staff of seven individuals to deliver academic support services to students [3]. Tutorial assistance is available in a number of academic areas and is usually accomplished on a one-on-one basis.  In addition to student tutors, faculty members often volunteer to serve in a tutorial role.  Many students also avail themselves of tutorial assistance that is offered through PLATO, a computer support program that can be tailored to work that is taking place in the classroom.  Faculty often use PLATO to reinforce work that is taking place in the classroom.  Developmental classes are offered on each of the College’s campuses [4].

Throughout the course of the semester, workshops are offered to support student academic performance [5].  For additional information about academic support services provided at SKCTC, see Comprehensive Standard 3.8 Library and Other Learning Resources.
