APPALACHIAN ARCHIVES STAFF
QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
Larry LaFollette, Archivist and Coordinator of the
Historical Information Management Program, has an MLIS from Florida State
University (1994), as well as, a
Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations from Michigan State
University (1979). He started his archival career with the State
Archives of Florida in 1982. In 1998 he
moved to Indiana
to be Assistant State Archivist and Deputy Director for the Indiana Commission
on Public Records. He came to SKCTC in
2001 to manage the Appalachian Archives and develop the Historical Information
Management Program. He is responsible
for collecting, processing, preserving, and providing access to the materials
within the Appalachian Archives. In addition
to developing the curriculum for the Historical Information Management Program,
he teaches and coordinates the courses and adjunct faculty for the program.
Theresa Osborne, Program Facilitator for the SKCTC
Appalachian Program has a Master’s Degree from Western
Kentucky University
(2004), as well as, a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies with an emphasis in
Communication from Western
Kentucky University
(2001). She began her professional career in 1986 as a Photo Journalist
with the Adair County News Statesman in Columbia,
KY. In 1989 she was offered
the job as Editor for the Cumberland County News in Burkesville,
KY and in 1990 she moved to Morgantown, KY
to take the editorship of the Green River Republican. In 1991 she accepted a
reporting position in Harlan,
KY on the Harlan Daily
Enterprise. There she covered city council meetings, the state take over of the
county school board, as well as developing several feature articles and
columns. She came to SKCTC in 1997 in a temporary capacity as an assistant in
the office of Appalachian Center director. In 1998 she was offered a full-time
position as the Appalachian Center Secretary. As the Center Secretary her
primary functions were to act as a liaison between the public, the Center’s
Facility Director, Archive/Program Director, HAPAS (Harlan Area Performing Arts
Series) Director, and Art Director in the performance of the Center’s various
programs. In 2002 her position was reclassified and upgraded to that of Program
Facilitator. Duties as the program facilitator focus in three main areas, the
Appalachian Program, the Archive Program and the Public. She assists the
Appalachian Program Director in the coordination of events, program planning,
grant writing, and community outreach events and projects. In addition she
supervises, trains, and assists in the direction of our volunteer and
work-study staff. She assists archive clients and visitors, tourists who are
interested in the Appalachian Center, graduate and public researchers, and
SKCTC students who participate in a wide range of community oriented projects.
In her work with the public she helps teachers in other programs as well as the
local coal mining museum, with special class projects that engage their
students and clients in the basics of photography and oral history gathering
techniques. In addition she has developed two new Folk Studies courses that
have been adopted as General Education and cross-cultural courses, Introduction
to Folk Studies and Cultural Diversity. She has also worked in partnership with
Rhona Creech in the development of a Video Fieldwork course that can be team
taught between the Appalachian Program and the Video Communications Department.

Theresa Osborne
- Member
of the American Folklore Society and the Appalachian Studies Association.
- Won
the Archie Green Travel Award to the 2004 meeting of the American Folklore
Society in Salt Lake City,
UT
- Served
as the Community Liaison for the Harlan County PACT Project as well as one
of the Executive Producers for the community theatre production of Higher
Ground from 2002 until 2005.
- Currently
serving on the planning board to establish the Kentucky Folklore Society.
- Served
as a presenter and artist at the 2005 Kentucky Folklife Festival, held in Frankfort.
- Assisted
in the production of the Harlan
County portion of
the Highway 23 Driving Tour CD.
- Attended
the 2004 Fife Folklore Conference in Logan,
UT and hosted by Utah State
University.
- Was
awarded a Kentucky Folklife Community Scholars designation in 2003
