Tile Mosaic

Tile mosaic workshops continue throughout the county. In the Spring of 2004, a community planning process to design and construct large public artworks incorporating tile mosaic for permanent installation in Harlan County was begun

Public art is important. It brings the community together into a common project

Public art gets people more involved in their community and it makes the county look better.

...and more fun and enjoyable to live in.

Examples of the completed murals can be seen to the left. In other tile projects, Joyce Ogden worked with the staff of Pine Mountain Settlement School to engage their community in the creation of a tile mosaic hopscotch board at the school’s playground.  Connie Owens and Maxine Clay began planning with the Lynch City Council a tile mosaic work in their community.  Work on that project continues into Fall 2007.

While working on the tile mosaic, I met many people from my class and the community.  We shared family stories and opinions about difficult community topics that people do not normally feel comfortable talking about.  I felt very at ease when talking with people I had just met about issues such as children not getting what they need out of their education.  The reason I felt so comfortable when talking with people was we were working on a project involving community, creativity, and wonder.  Participation in the tile project added to my positive outlook on life in Harlan County.  Being involved in the projects created the opportunity for me to see beautiful things about my community that you can only see when you have a direct part in their development.
