| Tile Mosaic -
Cloverfork Mural |
 |
 |
The new tile mosaic mural on the
outside of the Clover Fork Clinic is the result of a two-year
collaboration between the Clinic, Evarts High School, and the
Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical
College.
Southeast students Danielle Burke, Maxine Clay, and Elli Pace worked
in collaboration with Evarts High School art teacher Kristen Zink to
design and construct the mural, which features hand-sculpted tile
letters depicting aspects of life on Clover Fork. Southeast
Professor of Art Joseph Scopa provided technical assistance to the
project, fired the hand-sculpted tiles made by Zink and the Evarts
and Southeast students; designed the angle iron frame used to
support the mural; and directed installation of the mural. The frame
was constructed by Britt Lawson’s welding students at Southeast.

The project is part of a
program in public art and student community engagement funded by
grants from the Rockefeller Foundation’s PACT (Partnerships
Affirming Community Transformation) program and the United States
Department of Education’s FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of
Postsecondary Education) program. The FIPSE funds came as part of a
collaboration between Southeast, other rural community colleges
around the nation, and MDC, a non profit organization in Chapel
Hill, North Carolina.
Special thanks also go to Jared
Boggs, Denver and Jordan Turner, John Stewart, the city of Evarts
and Mayor Burl Fee, and Harlan County magistrate Chad Brock. They
were among fifty students and community members who assisted in the
design, construction, and/or installation of the mural. The
Appalachian Program at Southeast and Clover Fork Clinic are grateful
to all who participated for their help.
