Humanities 202: Survey of Appalachian Studies I

Course Description:  Presents an inter-disciplinary introduction to Appalachian history, economy, geography, politics, and culture, primarily through exploration of texts about the region, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Emphasizes geography, Appalachian identity, works, values, and communication.  May also include exploration of regional music, traditional arts, drama, photography, film, and, where applicable, community-based explorations of the Appalachian experience. Attributes: Cultural Studies, Humanities, Social Interaction

 

Humanities 203: Survey of Appalachian Studies II

Course Description:  Presents an inter-disciplinary introduction to Appalachian history, economy, geography, politics, and culture, primarily through exploration of texts about the region, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Emphasizes migrations, economy, belief, expression, politics and government, and environment.  May also include exploration of regional music, traditional arts, drama, photography, film, and, where applicable, community-based explorations of the Appalachian experience.  Attributes: Cultural Studies, Humanities, Social Interaction

 

Humanities 204: Appalachian Seminar

Course Description:  Examines in detail one or more issues pertinent to the Appalachian region. Topics may include but are not limited to: cultural diversity, religious expression, politics and government, trends in Appalachian literature, or trends in regional sociological scholarship. Topics may vary from semester to semester. This course may be repeated once for credit with a different topic.  Attributes: Cultural Studies, Humanities, Social Interaction

 

English 232: Literature & Place (Appalachian Literature)

Course Description:  A course exploring a number of selected literary texts with special attention to the construction of personal, ethnic, racial, or national identity.  The course may consider how race, class, sexuality, and/or nationality influence representations of experience.  Attention will be paid to student writing.  Attributes: Humanities

Description:

The Appalachian Studies certificate will provide students a wide variety of academic directions to follow.  The key components for each option, Humanities 202, 203, and 204, will form the core for the Appalachian Studies certificate and will provide a basic overview of all aspects of Appalachian studies.  Given this core, students can then select a more focused aspect of Appalachian culture to study.

Appalachian Studies

  Core:
  Upon completion of this certificate, the graduate will be able to:
  I. Communicate Effectively
    1. Speak and write clearly using Standard English.
    2. Interact cooperatively with others using both verbal and non-verbal means.
  II. Think critically
    1. Demonstrate problem solving through interpreting, analyzing, summarizing, and/or integrating a variety of materials.

Communication Option:

  1.  Demonstrate an awareness of the complexity of communication in Appalachian culture.
  2. Recognize the impact language has had within the region and outside of the region.
  3.  Research effectively various aspects of communication across cultures.
  4. Identify norms and values in a variety of cultures and in Appalachian culture in particular.

Creative Writing Option:

  1. Recognize the constructs of Appalachian literature.
  2. Recognize the styles of Appalachian writers and the different genres of Appalachian literature.
  3. Recognize such aspects of Appalachian literature as point-of-view, symbolism, metaphor, tone, and dialogue.
  4. Analyze the differences between Appalachian literature and other more broad-based literatures.

Music Option:

  1.  Recognize the influence of folk music from outside of Appalachia upon Appalachia.
  2. Recognize the style and construction of the various types of Appalachian music and songs.
  3.

Identify the key stylists of Appalachian music and their influence.

Science Option:

  1. Become physically aware of where the graduate is in the world’s environment in general and Appalachia in particular.
  2. Gain a respect for the uniqueness of the biology and ecology of the Cumberland Plateau and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Social Science Option:

  1. Recognize the constructs of cultures in general and Appalachian culture in particular.
  2. Recognize the general beliefs, behaviors, and diversity of Appalachian history and culture.
  3. Analyze the past and recognize the present’s relationship with the past in Appalachian culture.
