RESPIRATORY CARE

  1. RESPIRATORY CARE Admissions Procedure

     

    • ·       Applicant must be at least 17 years old with verification of age.
    • ·       Applicant must take required entrance exam or provide ACT scores acceptable for college admission.
    • ·       Applicant must have high school diploma or GED and college transcripts sent to Southeast Kentucky

                  Community and Technical College Pineville Campus.

    • ·       Applicant must complete an application for admission to SKCTC.
    • ·       Applicant must complete an application for admission to the Respiratory Care Program.
    • ·       Applicant must attend a pre-admissions conference.
    • ·       New applicant must meet with a Respiratory Care faculty member for advising.
    • ·       New applicant must apply for admission into the Respiratory Care Program prior to March 1 each year.
    • ·       Applicant must meet the minimum requirements of the Respiratory Care admissions committee.
    • ·       Applicant must complete the prerequisites of the Respiratory Care Program.

     

    Admission into the Respiratory Care Program is based on:

     

    • ·       The number of general education courses completed
    • ·       The student GPA
    • ·       The student ACT score

     

    Prerequisites for admission to the Respiratory Care Program are:

    • ·       BIO 137     Anatomy & Physiology I
    • ·       MT 110      Applied Math or higher

     

    Technical Standard necessary for admission to the Respiratory Care Program:

     

              1. The ability to lift 25 pounds and to wear face masks and gloves

     

              2. The ability to ascend and descend stairways

     

              3. Sufficient tactile and visual acuity, such as needed for accurate monitoring of life support systems and for

                       observation skills necessary for patient assessment

     

              4. Sufficient communication skills (verbal, non-verbal, & written) to interact with individuals and to communicate

                       their needs promptly and effectively

     

              5. Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health care needs

                       to assess health needs of the patients through the use of monitoring devices such as cardiac monitors,

                       stethoscopes, ventilators, and fire alarms, etc.

     

              6. Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement respiratory therapy skills

                       including the manipulation of equipment

     

     

Program Description

The Respiratory Care Program of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree and eligibility for both CRT and RRT examinations.  The program prepares individuals with the basic competencies necessary to function as a Respiratory Therapist.  The curriculum features specialized instruction in the basic sciences, mathematics, communications, anatomy and physiology as well as Respiratory Care course work.  The program consists of school based classroom lecture courses and laboratory experience coordinated with clinical experience in hospitals and other health care settings. 

Employment Opportunities

The job outlook for Respiratory Therapy is expected to be very good. Employment is expected to rise faster than the national average for all occupations thru 2012 due to the growth of the middle-aged and elderly population. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics the annual earnings of Registered Respiratory Therapists was $40,220 in 2002. The middle 50% earned between $34,430 and $46,130. The median annual earnings for Respiratory Therapy Technicians were $34,130 in 2002.
