Surgical Technology
Admission Procedures:
To be considered for review by the selection
committee and recommendation for admission the
following must be on file:

Application for admission to
the college
·
Application
for admission to the Surgical Technology Program
·
High
school transcript or GED score report
·
ACT,
SAT, or COMPASS scores
·
Transcripts
of all post-secondary education/training
·
Meet
with Surgical Technology faculty for advising
·
Applicants
are considered pre-surgical technology students while taking pre-requisites
·
Meet
minimum selective admission committee requirements
·
Attend
one pre-admission conference each selective cycle
Program Selection:
The selection admission committee meets
in March and the list of candidates is sent to the president of the
college for approval. A class is admitted once per year, starting
with the fall semester. The minimum
selection
criteria of pre-requisite courses
include anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and medical terminology.
Preference will be given to
applicants who have completed a certified nurse aide course. CPR certification is
required prior to starting the fall
semester.
Technical Standards:
Surgical Technologists must be able
to perform the following skills:

Speak
and communicate with clarity
·
Hear
adequately for conversation, telephone, alarms, and patient body sounds
·
Sight
with natural corrected vision
·
Lift,
push, pull to ambulate, transfer, or position patients
·
Stand
for long periods of time
·
Walk
around facility
·
Bend,
crouch, kneel, or twist body
·
Climb
stairs in case of fire or absence of elevator
·
Reach
and grasp overhead in front of body
·
Sit
without movement for long periods of time
·
Fine
motor control of fingers, wrists for handling of surgical instruments and
equipment
·
Coordination
of eye/hand and eye/hand/foot movements for handling of surgical instruments
and equipment
·
Interpret
instructions furnished in oral or written form
·
Deal
with problems with standard instructions
·
Follow
and carry out detailed oral or written form
·
Read
and comprehend charts, reports, and manuals
·
Perform
math functions
·
Apply
knowledge of life science (A&P – Microbiology)
·
Wear
protective clothing, gloves, face masks/shields
